about

A summery day in June 2023. The band is taking a break from a rehearsal.
“I don’t know what it is, but something did that stuff to people.”
Another: “It gives me chills when I see people wearing masks sitting on the train today.”

The Lucerne (CH) indie band Mono Mochi presents their last pre-single “How It Ends”
as another musical facet of their debut album “Oh Elsa!” (release: May 31, 2024).
While the first singles take listeners on a pleasant journey into the land of indie music, with “How It Ends” the band now ventures into a more serious topic:
a phase that began in March 2020 and changed the life of people for many years to come.

Singer Jakob's fragile voice, backed only by a simple guitar and synthesizer pad at the beginning of the song, reflects on the current state:
We have become thin-skinned. The last few years have left their mark.
We have closed our eyes to protect ourselves, but at the same time we have turned inward and closed ourselves off to the world at large.

As the ponderous pre-chorus approaches the chorus, the gloomy picture slowly clears up and gives rise to hope:
Accompanied by the band's typical polyphonic, spherical singing, the lyrical self comes to the realization that this situation is a dead end. We must move on.

Drummer Simon Hafner describes the creation of the song as follows:

“The pandemic acted as a catalyst for many social processes, both positive and negative. Our music processes this and at the same time shows that things continue.
“How It Ends” is an ambivalent song: social criticism, a calm, disturbed outcry and encouragement at the same time. It is aimed at all burnt-out, fearful and hopeful people who have found their way through this time despite all adversity. We feel you!”

With their two pre-singles “Wild Thyme” and “Whatkeepsmwakingup”, Mono Mochi has already celebrated their first successes, such as airplays on several radio stations across Switzerland, Brazil and South America.

lyrics

It really felt like
This skin got pretty thin
And like a child
You close your eyes

We’ll make it through
This time as every time before
Knowing how it ends

I’ve got the feeling
Noone gets any closer to each other for real
And I was wrong to believe that we could all change
Or that we would indeed

This is not a scene for me now
So I take another step and go out of town
(2x)

And like a child
You close your eyes
Gone are you
This simple disguise

We’ll make it through
This time as every time before
Knowing how it ends

The equation is simple:
Mono Mochi = Mac DeMarco meets Real Estate meets Tame Impala and The War On Drugs.
